In this study, the lymphocyte count was used as an index of effectivenesess of chemotherapy since stem cells are generally classified as lymphocytes in the analysis of bone marrow semars. The relationship between the absolute bone marrow lymphocyte counts and the duration of complete remission was studied in 25 patients with acute myelocyteic leukemia who had been in complete remission for at least 5 months. The median duration of remission was 20 months for 17 patients with absolute bone marrow lymphocyte counts of ≤3,000/μl (group A) and 7 months for 8 patients with counts of >3,000/μl (group B). The median survival time was 22 months for group A and 15.5 months for group B. These differences between the two groups were significant (p<0.05), but there were no significant differences when the patients were divided at a bone marrow nucleated cell count of 5,000/μl.
