In the patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) exhibiting cyclic changes in peripheral blood leukocytes, changes in M-CSF and CFU-GM-inhibitory activity in the urine were studied. M-CSF activity in the urine was seen negatively correlated with peripheral blood monocyte count, and to increase prior to increases in peripheral monocytes. CFU-GM-inhibitory activity was high at the stage of increasing leukocytes and CFU-GM in peripheral blood as well as CFU-GM in bone marrow cells, but low at the stage of decreasing leukocytes. The number of CFU-GM in peripheral blood cells and in bone marrow cells in the decreasing leukocyte stage was lower than those levels found in common CML. These results indicate increased M-CSF activity and the consequent increase in monocytes to be closely related to the lesion of increasing leukocytes while CFU-GM-inhibitory activity seems more a negative regulator of the lesion of decreasing leukocytes.
