The structure of gilvocarcin M, C<SUB>26</SUB>H<SUB>26</SUB>O<SUB>9</SUB>, an antibiotic with a novel carbon skeleton, has been determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. The space group is P2<SUB>1</SUB> with <I>a</I>=15.063(5), <I>b</I>=16.162(4), <I>c</I>=4.905(2) Å, β=91.47(3)°, and <I>Z</I>=2. The structure was solved by direct methods, and least-squares refinement using 1734 reflexions gave the final <I>R</I> value of 0.054. The title compound is composed of a unique aglycone and a fucofuranose, which are linked together through a C–C glycosyl linkage. The furanose ring takes the <SUP>°</SUP><I>E</I> conformation.
