The structure of <I>N</I>-carboxy-γ-benzyl-L-glutamate anhydride has been determined by X-ray analysis. The crystal is orthorhombic; space group, P212121; <I>Z</I>=4 with <I>a</I>=7.766(1), <I>b</I>=27.470(4), and <I>c</I>=5.948(1) Å. The structure was deduced by the direct method and refined to a final <I>R</I> value of 0.057 for 1504 observed reflections by the block-diagonal least-squares method. The hydrogen bond is formed between the imino group and the carbonyl group of the side chain. The dimension of the five-membered ring is affected by the intermolecular hydrogen bond as compared with the crystal structures of the other <I>N</I>-carboxy anhydrides of α-amino acid.
