Pharyngo-cutaneous and esophago-cutaneous fistulae can arise from failure of the flap used for primary reconstruction of the esophagus. In some patients, it is preferred to avoid primary reconstruction and to retain fistulae as pharyngo-esophageal stoma for the period of observation, when there is a possibility of local recurrence. We attempted to close these fistulae using PMMC flaps in 2 patients. The PMMC flap was sutured to the cervical skin bed which included the fistulae, and the muscle was covered by a split-thickness skin graft. In both patients the postoperative course was uneventful and satisfactory. This technique is recommended for one-stage closure of pharyngo-cutaneous and esophago-cutaneous fitulae, because of its technical simplicity and viability of the flap.
