Three-week-old Fisher-344 female rats, when fed a low-calucium (0.1%), vitamin Dreplete diet containing 2% strontium chrolide, developed a severe rachitic condition within 3 weeks. After being fed the above diet for 3 weeks, the rats were separated into 3 groups. Group 1 was the normal diet group. The rats received a CE-2 diet (Ca 1.0%). Group 2 was the low calucium diet group (Ca 0.1%). Group 3 was the strontium diet group (Ca 1.0%, Sr 2.0%). The rats were killed at intervals during the 10 days. In the group 1 and 2, calcification was evident in the widened growth plate in the first 3rd day. In the group 3, calcification was evident in the first 4th day. In comparison with the normal diet group, the elevation of serum levels of Ca in the strontium group was delayed.These results suggest that the CaxPi product of the blood is an important factor for the calcification on the healing process of growth cartilage of rats with strontium induced rickets.
