We investigated the effects of Astragali Radix (AR) from two original plants [Astragalus mongholicus Bunge (MO) and Astragalus membranaceus Bunge (ME)] collected in August and September on the peritoneal exudate cell (PEC) functions in mice. The number of mice PECs increased by oral administration and intraperitoneal injection of an AR extract (AE). The increase in the number of PECs was the highest when AE prepared from MO and ME harvested on the September 28th was administrated. No significant difference was observed between the effects of the extracts from the two original plants (MO and ME). Macrophages were the predominant cell population of the PEC in the mice orally treated with AE, but neutrophils were in the mice injected with AE. The active oxygen (AO) productivity in the PEC from the mice treated with AE was higher than that of the control mice. Difference was observed in the effect on AO productivity between the samples harvested on different times.
