Pharmacological Quality of Astragali Radix : The Effect on Antibody Production In Vitro

Thirty-nine Astragali Radix (AR) samples were examined for their pharmacological qualities and for their effect on antibody production in vitro. Some of the AR extracts (AE) enhanced the antibody production by 2.5 times the control level, but some had no effect. AEs had different effective concentrations. Samples harvested in Shanhsi and Neiminggol effectively enhanced the antibody production, whereas the Hsiahsi samples had a weak effect. Its effect on antibody production was found to be related neither to the diameters of the AR root, nor to the concentration of isoflavonoids or y-amino butyric acid, which are the indexes used for chemical evaluation of the quality of AR. The major components of AE were carbohydrates (64.3-103.4%), proteins was lower (1.4-15.7%). The acidic polysaccharide fraction of AE enhanced the antibody production, but the weakly acidic polysaccharide fraction suppressed it.
