Senna Leaf (Sennae Folium), a popular purgative folk medicine, is originated from Cassia angustifnlia VAHL. (Tinnevelly Senna) or C. acutifolia DELILE (Alexandrian Senna) according to definition of the 13th Japanese Pharmacopoeia. There is no marked differences in the pharmacological effects between the two species, and their morphological or microscopic features were also quite similar to each other. In the present, we found that the vein-islet number might be used for differentiation between these two species. We also found that there were significant differences in the constituent of anthraquinone and anthrone glucosides (rhein 8-O-glucoside and sennoside B) and naphtalene glycosides (tinnevellin glucoside and 6-hydroxymusizin glucoside), between Tinnevelly Senna and Alexandria Senna.
