On our continuous studies of the chemical constituents in the roots of the genus Sophora plants, we have revealed not only more than 120 of flavonoids with a prenyl group(s) but also resveratrol oligomers, and showed the close relationships between the occurrence of these phenolics and the morphological classification proposed by P.C. Tsoong and C.Y. Ma (1981). Through the new investigation of other two Sophora species (S. davidii and S. nuttaliana ) which were collected in U.S.A, we have isolated several flavanones, flavonostilbenes and resveratrol oligomers. In particular, from the roots of S. davidii, we succeeded in the isolation of the first naturally occurring resveratrol pentamer named davidiol D (4). Stilbene oligomers have so far been mainly isolated from the following five families; Vitaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Cyperaceae, Gnetaceae and Leguminosae. Among these families, however, resveratrol oligomers hitherto reported were just its dimers, trimers and tetramers. The first isolation of the stilbene pentamer attracts the attention to the presence of similar components in the five families mentioned above. In this symposium, we will present the structural elucidation of the resveratrol oligomers and the chemotaxonomic relationship between the Sophora species containing stilbene oligomers and flavonostilbenes.
