Coherent Epitaxy and Magnetic Properties of Sr_2FeMoO_6 Thin Films on Ba_<0.4>Sr_<0.6>TiO_3-Buffered SrTiO_3 Substrates

Thin films of double perovskite Sr_2FeMoO_6 have been grown epitaxially on (001) SrTiO_3 substrates with a buffer layer of Ba_<0.4>Sr_<0.6>TiO_3, which has a nearly complete lattice matching to Sr_2FeMoO_6. Their structural and magnetic properties were investigated and compared with those of films grown directly on bare SrTiO_3 substrates. It is shown by X-ray analysis that Ba_<0.4>Sr_<0.6>TiO_3 buffer layers with an appropriate lattice parameter enable us to achieve coherent growth of Sr_2FeMoO_6 thin films, while bare SrTiO_3 with a -1% lattice mismatch results in incoherent growth with partially relaxed strain. It is found that coherently grown Sr_2FeMoO_6 thin films exhibit a saturation magnetization value of 3.8 μ_B per formula unit (f.u.), which is comparable to the predicted values. The implication of this study is that coherent growth without strain relaxation is effective to obtain the full magnetization value in ordered double perovskite ferromagnetic thin films.
