University3(C)-Acylation of 3-unsubstituted tetronic acids has been achieved with carboxylic acid (in combination with DCC) or anhydride in the presence of triethylamine and DMAP. The method gives good to excellent yields, except for the acyl group bearing no alpha-hydrogen.
