Purpose: We examined expression of Cu, Zn-SOD in human oral tumors. The relationships of these results to staging and histologically differentiated grade were also studied. Methods: the human oral tumors in this study were surgically obtained from 6 tonque tumors, 4 oral floor tumors, 4 buccal mucosa tumors and 1 hard palate tumor. Intensity of the Cu and Zn containing superoxide dismutase (Cu, Zn-SOD) was immunohistochemically observed in human oral tumors. Our results were showed as follows. Results: No significant relation was found between the intensity of Cu, Zn-SOD and stage. However, positive staining of Cu, Zn-SOD was seen in regions of well differentiated squamous cell carcinomas and hyerplasia as well as normal tissues. Regions of poorly or moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinomas showed negative staining of Cu, Zn-SOD. The incidence of positive cases in well differentiated cell carcinomas was significantly higher than that in poorly differentiated cell carcinomas. Conclusion: These results indicate that the intensity of Cu, Zn-SOD varies according to the degrees of differentiation in human oral tumors.
