The anti-EB viral and the anti-adenoviral antibody titers were determined, and the peripheral and the intratonsillar lymphocyte subsets (OKT4,OKT8 and OKIa1) were investigated as well as local bacteria to study the viral infections as the origin of tonsillitis. VCA IgG, EBNA and EA were used for determining anti-EB viral antibody titer and the adenoviruses 1 and 2 were used for anti-adenoviral antibody titer determination. Anti-adenoviral antibody titer was higher in the adult habitual tonsillitis group than in the child habitual tonsillitis group. As to the correlation between anti-EB viral antibody and lymphocyte subsets, negative correlation was found between peripheral OKT4 and EBNA and between intratonsillar OKIa1 and VCA IgG while the correlation between intratonsillar OKT8 and EBNA was positive. Negative correlation was also found between OKIa1 and anti-adenovirus 1 antibody. No significant difference was found in the bacteria detection rate between the higher and the lower anti-EB viral antibody titer group in contrast with the detection rate which was higher in the higher anti-adenoviral antibody titer group than in the lower titer group.
