Thirty-eight ears with chronic otitis media were treated surgically in our clinic. Chronic otitis media without cholesteatoma may be successfully treated by surgery. Surgery was indicated for long persistent otorrhea lasting for a year or longer, bone destruction with the infection of pseudomonas group and fungal otitis media. Twelve ears without cholesteatoma remained uneventful after the surgery. Cholesteatoma has to be removed thoroughly. Revision surgery was necessary in 7 of 11 ears with cholesteatoma, which were treated by the intact canal wall technique. Elimination of cholesteatoma with removal of the posterior meatal wall resulted in no need for revision surgery. Planned staged tympanoplasty can be performed in children without any frouble. Application of staged tubo-tympanoplasty was expected to produce favourable results in children with Eustachian tubal dysfunction due to inflammatory stenosis. The audiometric success rate in our series amounted to 77.4%.
