The tonsillar provocative test has been widely used for the diagnosis of tonsillitis, but little has been elucidated about its action mechanism. We gave an ultrashortwave provocation to 123 patients before tonsillectomy and examined the changes of lymphocyte subsets in provoked and nonprovoked tonsils. The cases were divided into a child group and an adult group, and further into a habitual tonsillitis group and a focal infection group according to the disease classification. The subsets were identified by the monoclonal antibody method. As for lymphocyte subset ratios, both child and adult habitual tonsillitis groups showed a decrease in helper T lymphocytes in provoked tonsils, the child focal infection group a decrease in active T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes in provoked tonsils and the adult focal infection group a decrease in helper T lymphocytes in provoked tonsils. As for subset distribution, the child habitual tonsillitis group showed a low distribution in helper T lymphocytes and suppressor T lymphocytes in provoked tonsils and the adult habitual tonsillitis group a low distribution in helper T lymphocytes and suppressor T lymphocytes in nonprovoked tonsils.
