Ultra-short wave and massage tonsillar provocative tests have been widely used for tonsillopathy but their mechanisms of provocation are not yet known. In the present study, unilateral tonsils were provoked preoperatively in 108 patients with habitual tonsillitis. The provoked and the non-provoked tonsils were compared with the control tonsils from patients with no provocation in constitution and distribution of intratonsillar lymphocyte subsets to study the significance of changes of the subsets (OKT4,OKT8,and OKIa1) by provocative stimulation. Among lymphocyte subsets in child habitual tonsillitis, OKT4 was reduced by ultra short wave while OKT4 and OKIa1 were increased by massage. With respect to the distribution of lymphocyte subsets, the ultra-short wave-provoked tonsils showed lower OKT4 and OKT8 than the nonprovoked tonsils while the massage-provoked tonsils had high OKT4 in comparison with the nonprovoked tonsils. In adult habitual tonsillitis, OKT4 was reduced by ultra short wave while massage did not cause any significant changes. With respect to the distribution of lymphocyte subsets, the ultra-short wave provoked tonsils showed higher OKT4 and OKT8 than the nonprovoked tonsils while massage provocation resulted in no significant changes.
