Photometric determination of microquantity of cobalt in iron and steel was carried out by extracting the thiocyanate complex with methyl isobutyl ketone. After the separation of most of the ferric ions from hydrochloric acid solution by methyl isobutyl ketone extraction, the ferric ions remaining in aqueous phase were reduced to ferrous ions with stannous chloride, and then the thiocyanate complex of cobalt was extracted with methyl isobutyl ketone and determined photometrically. This method was modified so as to be applicable to stainless steels. About 0.001 per cent of cobalt contained in iron and steel could easily be determined by the proposed method.
