A New Photometric Determination of Cerium With Methylene Blue

A new photometric determination of cerium was examined by the utilization of reaction between methylene blue and cerium (IV). Cerium (IV) reacts with methylene blue in weakly alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide and extraction of this mixture resulted with benzene gives reddish violet coloration. Absorption maximum of this colored solution lies at 510 mμ and the amount of cerium and absorbancy are in linear relationship. Optimum pH of the solution at the time of extraction is above 9.6. Effect of coexisting elements was examined and it was found that manganese alone exhibited similar reaction, while tungsten, chromium, and antimony (V) affected this reaction. Majority of other elements were found to have comparatively small effect. This reaction was applied to the determination of cerium in thorium oxalate and lanthanum oxalate, and results thereby obtained are shown.
