X-Ray fluorescence analysis has the virtue of making it possible to determine several elements without destroying the sample of various state or shape. But, at the same time, it has the defect of having the secondary X-ray intensity of the element being tested markedly affected by the kind and amount of co-existing elements. In the present series of work, X-ray fluorescence intensity of copper in aluminum-copper alloy and of silver in aluminium-silver alloy was measured with General Electric's X-Ray Fluorescence Apparatus, with Machrett AEG 50T tungsten anticathode-sealed tube as the source of primary X-rays. At the same time, effect of tube voltage and current variation, and the effect of variation of aluminium concentration on the secondary X-ray intensity of copper or silver were also examined. It was thereby found that in both alloys, the intensity of K_α or K_β line was in linear relationship to the content of copper or silver and that there was no effect of aluminium. In the case of copper, powdered sample of aluminium-copper alloy was examined to obtain the relationship between granulation and intensity. It was found that the intensity of granular sample at above 200-mesh granulation was the same as that of the plate sample and a reproducible result was obtained, Using this method, determination of more than 0.01 % of copper in aluminium was carried out, and attempt was also made for analysis of segregation of copper in cast cylinder of aluminium-copper alloy.
