Two colorimetric methods for the rapid determinations of microquantities of silicon in steels were studied in which two different coloration of molybdenum yellow and of molybdenum blue were involved. After the fundamental research by means of Pulfrich's photometer, the colorimetry by molybdenum yellow method was carried out in the presence of iron, eliminating its interference by adding fluoride. Further, using ferrous iron and oxalic acid as reducing reagent, silicon was colorimetrically determined in the presence of iron by the molybdenum blue method. As small as 0.01 per cent of silicon in steels was determinable within ten minutes without any separation of iron.
