Study on Sintering Process of Titanium Carbide by Measuring the Change in Electrical Resistivity

The development of sintering is affected by complicated factors such as stress release, escaping of included gas and lubricant, change of contact area or bonding area among the particles by diffusion, condensation and vaporization, and performance of liquid phase. In the present work, to see such effects as described above on sintering of titanium carbide, an investigation was made by measuring the change in electrical resistivity between RT and 1450℃. Furthermore, influences of the addition of small amounts of carbides such as Cr_3C_2 and (TaNbTi)C, and Ni, Cr and Co as the binder were observed. The experimental results showed the pronounced decrease in electrical resistivity in the temperature range between about 200°and 750℃. It was indicated clearly that the primary sintering was effected by complicated factors such as stress release, escaping of included gas and the lubricant, and the increasing of contacting area. It was shown that above 800℃, the sintering proceeded mainly by diffusion, and an anomaly by performance of the liquid phase at about 1200℃. The increase in electrical resistivity by keeping temperature at above 1300℃ means the development of solubility of the carbide for metal binder.
