Residual stress in commercial steel caused by heat-treatment of water- and oil-quenching and subzero quenching were studied, the material being two kinds of steel containing 1%C and 1%C-1%Cr-1%Mo. The residual stress was determined by Heyn's method on the thermal history of the steel which were treated from the solution treatment temperature of hardening to room temperature and not affected by subzero treatment. The hardness resulting from subzero quenching was the highest of all others.
