Study on A_3 Transformation of Dispersion-Strengthened Iron

It is generally known that the volume contraction accompanied by A_3 transformation of dispersion-strengthened iron is smaller than that of ordinary iron^<(1)>. To clarify this phenomenon, the physical nature of the A_3 transformation was studied. As the dispersion-strengthened metals contain a great number of microscopic non-metallic particles which are chemically stable at high temperature, there may be a large interference of the particles the matrix which will cause an obstruction on the volume change. The A_3 transformation may be interfered on account of the rapid volume change, which will lead to the following phenomena : (1) The contractions by A_3 transformation of the dispersion-strengthened irons are considerably smaller than that of ordinary pure iron. (2) The thermal expansion coefficient of austenite after A_3 transformation is also smaller. (3) The A _3 transformation has a range of temperature such as in a carbon steel.
