Anomaly in Dilatation on Heating of Cold-worked 18-8 Stainless Steel

The phase transformations on heating 18-8 stainless steel cold-worked after solution-treatment have been investigated mainly by differential dilatation. Much more austenite was retained in rolled steel than in elongated, in hammered, or in wire-drawn one. α-phase formed by cold working transformed into γ-phase first at about 450℃, mostly at 650〜700℃, and finally at 800〜900℃. The thermal stability of α-phase changed with the changes of working method and the degree of working. Abnormal expansion was always observed at about 530℃ in dilatation curve of cold-worked 18-8 stainless steel irrespective of working method. Especially, this anomaly was observed clearly in rolled steel, and the amount of expansion increased as the rolling degree increased, but on the other hand, the amount of contraction at about 650℃ due to α→γ transformation decreased. This anomaly was conspicuous when steel was rolled with large surface friction between roll and steel, but when the rolling work was carried out by using any lubricant, only a small anomaly was observed in dilatation cruve as the case of elongated, or hammered or drawn steel.
