A study was made of the relation between the low-temperature brittleness and the nitrogen content in soft steel, low-carbon and low-manganese steel and low-manganese steel, each being quenched and tempered. When the specimen is tempered and slow-cooled, the transition temperature rises with the increase of nitrogen content initially rapidly and then slowly. It rises, however, proportionally to nitrogen content in the specimen tempered and quenched and in the specimen tempered, quenched and aged. In the low-manganese steel the grain size is varied by changing the quenching temperature, but the difference in the transition temperature is hardly observable.
