Sub-Zero Treatment of Quenched Steel. II : Effect of the Addition of Small Amount of Elements on the Stabilization of Retained Austenite

The stabilization of austenite after partial transformation to martensite was investigated using 1 per cent carbon steels containing small amount of elements, 0.14 per cent aluminium, 0.04 per cent titanium, 1 per cent nickel and 0.08 per cent tin respectively and an iron-nickel alloy containing 30 per cent nickel. The retained austenite of the steels containing aluminium and titanium were hard to be stabilized but that of the steels containing only silicon and manganese or, nickel and tin respectively were easily stabilized by room temperature aging. The stabilization could not be observed on the iron-30 per cent nickel alloy. From the result of this work, it was suggested that the stabilization of retained austenite will be caused by interstitial solute atoms such as carbon or nitrogen.
