Since free carbon unreacted as residue on the fabricating process of the carbide gives the influence to the quality of carbide, it is desirable to reduce it completely. Though many works have been made on the reducing process of free carbon contained in the carbide, no satisfactory method is yet found. In the present work, the method was improved by C-S reaction at temperatures ranging from 600℃ to 1200℃ in sulphur atmosphere. The results obtained were as follows : The reducing rate of free carbon increased with the increase of reaction temperature, time and generating temperature of sulphur gas, and attained a maximum value of 80 per cent at 1200℃ for 50 hrs. Argon was suitable as a carrier of sulphur gas. The largest effeciency of the free carbon reduction was obtained when metallic titanium was added to titanium carbide powder. Furthermore, the stability of titanium carbide in sulphur atmosphere at high temperatures was examined. It appeared by X-ray and chemical analyses that the formation of TiC-TiS solid solution and the decarburizing of TiC were improved by C-S reaction at high temperatures in sulphur atmosphere stimulately.
