Amorphous WO_3/electrolytic solution-type electrochromic displays (ECDs) have been examined colorimetrically using the CIE 1976 (L^*u^*v^*) color space including their transient characteristics. These data are shown to be strongly dependent on the thickness of WO_3 film; the optimum thickness is 0.4 μm. Obtained lightness L^* of ECDs in the OFF state is 90 and the color difference between the OFF and ON states is 85, which is incomparably superior to those of the existing liquid crystal displays.
