An electrochromic (EC) cell with liquid crystal 8CB and electrolytic substance TBAI in propylene carbonate (PC) is evaluated for its optical and colorimetric characteristics in the isotropic phase. Adding a small amount of PC 0.2 wt%, we can drop the transition temperature from nematic to isotropic phases of the cell, compared to that of the cell which uses no PC. Optimum concentration for a good color switching is TBAI 3 wt%. The color difference between the coloration and bleached states is shown as the lightness index vs chromatic index in comparison with that of the WO_3-cell.
