Colorimetric Study of Multiplexability for Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays

The multiplexability of twisted nematic (TN) type liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have been examined using colorimetry based on the 1976 CIE (L^*u^*v^*) color space. Two kinds of practical polarizers, developed for calculators and watches, were used for multiplexed TN-LCDs. The results obtained by colorimetry were compared with those by conventional physical photometry. i) Colorimetric evaluation is effective for characterizing multiplexed LCDs. ii) The number of scanned lines obtained by colorimetry is larger by a factor of three compared with that obtained by the conventional method. iii) Color formation as well as multiplexability are strongly dependent on the nature of the polarizers.
