Optical multistability is demonstrated using a liquid crystal light modulator operated in the electrically controlled birefringence mode. The experimental setup is composed of He-Ne lasers, a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal cell sandwiched between two polarizers, and a mirrorless electrical feedback system. Eight-valued optical memory, multistability, and threshold characteristics were obtained in the input-output properties. A method to construct the two-dimensional device is also proposed.
