The influence of a small pretilt on the voltage dependence of the capacitance(C-V)of nontwisting liquid crystal cells is described.Calculated C-V curves were fitted to the observed ones by adjusting the value of a single parameter, the pretilt angle;the magnitudes of the pretilt angle obtained in this way were shown to agree with those determined experimentally by the magnetocapacitive null method. Furthermore, it was found to be convenient to introduce an apparent threshold in order to describe the C-V curves of the pretilted cells. The theoretical apparent threshold was defined as the voltage at which the curvature of the C-V curve is maximum, while experimentally it was determined from the intersecting point of two lines drawn along the slopes of the C-V curve. The agreement between the two values was good.
