An optimum condition and other optical properties for voltage-controlled color formation (VCCF) using a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell with twist angles less than 90°are described. It is shown that an optumum condition is realized by choosing the twist angle of the nematic molecules equal to 45°. The material used in this experiment is a nematic mixture with a positive dielectric anisotropy. The roles of various factors such as retardation, spectral resolution, and viewing angle in the performance of the color formation are discussed. Under the optimum condition for VCCF, the characteristics of the spectral resolution and viewing angle are examined experimentally and are shown to be in agreement with the theory.
