A Study on Boundary Layer Arc in an MHD Generator Channel

In a propane-oxygen combustion MHD generator channel, experimental measurements were made of the V-I characteristics accompanying the arc current with an without and externally-applied magnetic field. The data for V-I characteristics were analyzed by a theoretical approach using Rosa's arc model. Good agreement between the theoretical results and the experimental data was observed. Moreover, the critical current densities were obtained from the V-I characteristics data and could be compared with a curve calculated by using Petty's model. It has been confirmed that a strong magnetic field affects the behavior of the electrode boundary-layer arc.
