Studies on the Electronic Energy States of Germanium Microcrystal and the Chemical Shift due to Surface Oxidization by Means of Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The energies of electronic states in the germanium microcrystals which were made by evaporation in inert gas (He) at low pressure were deduced from the photoelectron spectra induced by X-ray and ultraviolet irradiations. The valence band structure of the microcrystal which has the size ca. 4 nm in diameter was similar to that of the amorphous state. The origin may be due to a change in the many-body effect, an interaction between a hole and an electron, and/or multi-scattering of an electron originating in the imperfection in the structure of a microcrystal. The energies of inner-core electrons of a microcrystal which has size ca. 4 nm were the same as that of the bulk. The chemical shift due to oxidization of a powder-like microcrystal differs from that of the bulk surface.
