Methods of Measurement and Management of Decay Curves of Quenched-In Vacancies

The A.C. automatic recording method has been applied to measurement of the electrical resistivity decay in metals after quenching. The accuracy of measurement of the resistivity change is ±3 pΩcm for a slow change in resistivity and ±75 pΩcm for a rapid change. A characteristic of this method is that a large number of accurately measured values are obtained along the decay curve in comparison with the usual potentiometric method. Smoothing has been applied to the measured values, and a more accurate and smooth decay curve is obtained than the curve connecting the measured values. The decay rates along a smoothing decay curve are also obtained. Several examples indicate that the profile of the decay rates is more distinct than in a simple decay curve, i.e., the curve of dΔp/dt versus Δp is composed of 2 or 3 sections of different gradients.
