When designing the large tanker, the designer must chose the most effective structural system according to its principal particulars and the tank arrangement among several structural systems which may be considered. In this report, the authors try to analyze the structural strength of large tankers designed with a centreline bulkhead and without any strength member on the centreline, and then make some considerations as to the variations of the strength members which characterize each the structural system.As the results of this study, the authors obtain the following items : (1) The Centreline Bulkhead System is effective for the tanker whose breadth to depth ratio is rather large and/or whose tank length is long. But is should be noted that the centreline bulkhead must be designed as a swash bulkhead with very small opening ratio.(2) The Centreline Girderless System is effective for the tanker whose breadth to depth ratio is rather small and whose longitudinal bulkhead has enough strength against the longitudinal shear force. In this case, the breadth of the wing tank has little effects upon the structural strength so long as the breadth of the wing tank lies between 28〜33 percentages of the mould breadth of a ship.
