Effects of Deoxygibberellin C (DGO and 16-Deoxo-DGC on Gibberellin 3β-Hydroxylase and Plant Growth

• Deoxygibberellin C (DGC), a C/D ring-rearranged isomer of GA_<20>, was shown to inhibit the conversion of [2,3-3^H_2]GA_9 to [2-3^H]GA_4 by gibberellin 3β-hydroxylase from immature seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris. Deoxygibberellin C inhibited the promotion of growth by exogenously applied GA_<20> of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings. Evidence is also presented that DGC is a competitive inhibitor of the 3β-hydroxylase from P. vulgaris. However, DGC only weakly inhibited the conversion catalyzed by the 3β-hydroxylase from Cucurbita maxima at high concentrations, and it did not inhibit the promotion of growth by exogenously applied GA_9 of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seedlings. These results suggest that the 3β-hydroxylases from P. vulgaris and C. maxima have different structural requirements with respect to their substrates. 16-Deoxo-DGC also inhibited catalysis of the same conversion by 3β-hydroxylase from P. vulgaris, and it slightly inhibited the conversion catalyzed by the enzyme from C. maxima. Application of 16-deoxo-DGC caused the promotion of the growth of seedlings of both rice and cucumber.
