Metabolism of Gibberellins in Cell-Free Extracts of Anthers from Normal and Dwarf Rice

Cell-free extracts were prepared from anthers of normal and dwarf rice (Oryza sativa L.), and the metabolism of radioisotope-labeled gibberellins in the extracts was analyzed by HPLC and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). GA_<12> was converted to GA_<15> and GA_<34> in the extracts. GA_<20> was converted to GA_1, GA_8 and GA_<29>, but GA_9 was converted only to GA_<34>-The extracts of the dwarf cultivar, Waito-C (dy mutant), showed the same 3β-hydroxylation activity as did those of the normal cultivar, Nihonbare, indicating that the dy gene is not expressed in the anthers. These results suggest that the regulation of the biosynthesis of gibberellins in rice is organ-specific.
