A chlorophyll-preserving substance was isolated from rhizomes of Atractylodes lancea DC. and identified as (-)-hinesol on the basis of spectroscopic data. Hinesol at more than 0.22 mM was effective for preserving chlorophyll of oat (Avena sativa L. cv Victory) leaves in the dark with 40 to 50% of the initial chlorophyll content being retained at 2.2 mM. However, hinesol stimulated chlorophyll loss with light exposure and at 4.5 mM caused complete bleaching when measured 4 days after treatment.
