Apical 2-mm-long segments were obtained from primary roots of etiolated corn (Zea mays L., cv. Golden Cross Bantam 70) seedlings. The segments showed an absorbance decrease at 630 nm in the dark at 0℃ with a constant rate for at least 1 h. This absorbance decrease was suppressed by brief irradiation with red light (640 nm), and this red-light effect could be reversed by far-red light (740 nm) given immediately after the red light. Bounsen-Roscoe's law could be applied to both the red and far-red light effects. Thus, this light effect seemed to be mediated by phytochrome.
