Synchronization of Phosphorylation of a Chloroplast Protein with the Cell Division Cycle in Heterosigma akashiwo

Heterosigma akashiwo cells cultured under various conditions were incubated with [^<32>P]-H_3PO_4 for 4 h at various phases of photoperiods of 12 h of light and 12 h darkness, and the phosphorylated proteins in each subcellular fractions were analyzed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A 36-kDa polypeptide (PP36) localized in the soluble fraction of chloroplasts was phosphorylated during the period between the fourth and eighth hour of darkness, just before cell division. PP36 was also phosphorylated just when cell division started even when cells were grown in continuous light.
