The effect of external pH on the membrane potential of Nitella and its linkage to metabolism

The membrane potential of Nitella is highly sensitive to external pH in the neutral region (pH 5.5 to 8) in the light. We found that the sensitivity usually was reduced by darkness, metabolic inhibitors (DCMU, DNP) or cooling. Under some circumstances the high pH-sensitivity of the membrane potential was observed even in the dark. However, even in this case, it was reduced by DNP or cooling. These results indicate that the external pH-dependence of the membrane potential of Nitella is closely linked to metabolism.
