Effect of antibiotics on biogenesis of mitochondria during aging of sliced sweet potato root tissue

The number of mitochondrial particles, and the activities of peroxidase and cytochrome oxidase increased during aging of sliced sweet potato root tissue. Blasticidin S inhibited all these processes, indicating the occurrence of de novo synthesis of protein. Chloramphenicol suppressed the synthesis of cytochrome oxidase and the reproduction of mitochondria but did not suppress peroxidase synthesis. Cylcoheximide suppressed peroxidase synthesis leaving the activities of cytochrome oxidase synthesis and mitochondrial reproduction unimpaired. A differentiation of ribosomal and mitochondrial protein syntheses is suggested. Mitomycin C and 5-iododeoxyuridine inhibited the reproduction of mitochondria but not the synthesis of enzymes.
