An enzyme in mung bean leaves that damages cell organelles which leads to loss of their matrix enzymes

An enzyme causing loss of a matrix enzyme (hydroxypyruvate reductase) from leaf peroxisomes was found in an extract of the primary leaves of the mung bean and was purified 37-fold from the extract. The enzyme required calcium, magnesium, manganese or zinc ion for its activity. Loss of matrix enzymes also was induced in mitochondria and chloroplasts. When etiolated seedlings of the mung bean were illuminated, organelle-damaging activity in the primary leaves increased markedly.
