Membrane-bound proteinase and acid phosphatase activities, but not cytosol proteinase activity, in pea cotyledons increased after lag phases during germination. The activity hydrolyzing N-α-benzoyl-D,L-arginine p-nitroanilide in the membrane fraction increased rapidly in the imbibition stage. Whether the increases are due to de novo synthesis of the enzyme proteins was studied.
