The present paper describes the further separation of enzyme components and the nature of differences between cellulase and xylanase in an enzyme preparation isolated from the culture of this mold in the wheat bran saw dust or the synthetic medium. From this series of experiments, it may be concluded : 1) A purified preparation consisting mainly of cellulase and xylanase, but accompanied with small amounts of various other enzymes, was obtained from wheat bran saw dust culture extract. On the other hand, only four activities of cellulase, xylanase, amylase and maltase were revealed in the culture filtrate of the synthetic medium.2) Relative activities of cellulase and xylanase in the culture filtrate of the synthetic medium supplied with wheat bran extract were compared with those obtained from the control lacking the supplement, and their activities in each fraction produced by ethanol fractionation were also compared with each other. The results obtained may be taken as an indication of the difference between these two enxymes in some respects.3) The random scission mechanism of xylan chain by the Trichoderma xylanase it the same as that of cellulose degradation by cellulase of this mold and the optimum pH for the two enzymes are approximately the same.4) An enzyme preparation consisting in great part of cellulase mixed with a trace of xylanase was obtained from each culture filtrate by ethanol fractionation after maintaining it at 40℃ and pH 2.4 for specified duration.5) Cellulose chain was splitted by the Trichoderma cellulase in a random fashion showing a very close analogy with alpha-amylase in starch hydrolysis.
