Adv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.9, No.2 pp45-53, 2003. It has been well known that strenuous of endurance exercise causes oxidative stress to the body due to the increased oxygen consumption and the enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS), thus potentially damaging the cell membrance and organelles. Superoxide dismutanse (SOD), which serves to convent super anion (O2-) to oxygen (O2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), is one of the most important antioxidant enzymes. Three types of SOD isoenzymes, i.e., Cu,Zu-SOD, Mn-SOD, and extrancellular (EC) SOD, have been identified in mammals. Compared to Cu,Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD, there are much fewer available reports on physical exercise and EC-SOD. EC-SOD is a secretory glycoprotein with an affinity for heparin-loke substances, which is located in extracellular fluids, including plasma dna the extracellular matrix. In the vessel wall, a major isoform of SOD is the EC-SOD. Because of its location, EC-SOD has been hailed as the principal regulator of endotheliun-derived nitric oxide (NO) bioactivity with the antiatherogenic and vasodilation effects. Thus, this review will discuss the characteristics of EC-SOD and the role of EC-SOD in physical exercise, especially focussing on its antiatherogenic effects.
