Quantitative Contribution of Oxidative Metabolism in the Human Calf During Supramaximal Plantar Flexion Exercise. Adv. Exerc. Sports Physiol, Vol.6, No.1 pp7-16, 2000. The purpose of thies study was to investigate the quantitative contribution of the aerobic energy system during a short-term supramazimal exercise using nesa infrared continuous wave spectroscopy (NIRcws) and -phosphorus magnetic resonance spectriscopy (P-MRS) in ten healthy male volunteers. Subject performed a 30-sec supramaximal plantar flexion exercise (Supra.Ex), with a cuff inflation to induce arterial occiusion (Cuff-Supra.Ex) from the start of the excrcise, and under anaerobic conditions, after oxygenation reached its minimum level due to the arterial occlusion (An-Supra.Ex). The resting muscle O2 consumption (muscle VO2) in the calf (medial gastrocnemius muscle) estimated from the simultancous measurement of NIRcws and P-MRS during a 15-min arterial occlusion period was 1.67 ± 0.29 μM Oζsec. Muscle VO2 incerased progressively to 87.4 ± 12.4 μM Oζsec, which was equivalent to approximately 48.3 % at the end of the exrcise. The ATP productions via both the anaerobic and acrobic energy supply systems were 1.83 ± 0.11 mM/sec and 0.33 ± 0.33 mM/sec, resoectively. The relative contributions of both energy supply systems over the excrcise were 82.2 ± 2.6 % in the anacribic and 17.8 ± 2.6 % in acrobic energy supply system, respectively. It is concluded that the acrobic energy system for ATP production contributes from the initaial phase and that the acrobic energy supply system is the major source of energy for muscle contraction even during a shotr-term supramaximal excrcise.
